My Top Ten – Dallas, TX
UPDATED 10/2008: BIJOUX LOSES IT’S SPOT TO FEARING’S.
My hometown actually has great food. It was difficult to even rank these, but if you find yourself a) agreeing with my other posts; and b) in Dallas; you won’t be disappointed with these recommendations. It’s biased towards fine dining, but there is a little of everything. As I visit these again, I will post new reviews if appropriate.
Lola, The Restaurant—my absolute favorite. Fine dining and a great value for both food and wine.
Fearing’s–fireworks at the table, ritzy atmosphere, impeccable service, the rich and famous amongst you. What’ss not to love?
Hibiscus—might not quite hit the fine dining threshold, but great food and a great crowd. Great wine list but often out of the best values (which is actually the trick—the sommelier will always upgrade you to something great if your selection is not available). My favorite steak in Dallas.
Teppo—tiny sushi restaurant wins over my other pick, Sushi on McKinney, on ambiance and presentation
Abacus—Celebrity chef Kent Rathburn’s signature joint seems to be closed for remodeling. Please come back!
Patrizio’s—Trendy, super-location, honest Italian food at an average of $10 per plate with a wine list that offers equally good values. Best $50 date in Dallas—maybe in the world. What more do I need to say?
The French Room—one of two truly stuffy venues in Dallas. But worth putting on the jacket.
Il Sole—source of great conflict between my wife and I—I love it, she doesn’t. Food is good, celebrities go there, and the Tuesday night wine-paired dinner is the best deal in town. NOW CLOSED. Wife wins again…
York Street—Good creative haute cuisine suffering from unfortunate décor, odd location, and mismatched wait staff. Otherwise would crack my top five.
Snuffer’s—Ha! You didn’t expect a burger joint, did you? I have traveled the world in search of the best burger and this is my pick. The cheddar fries must have cocaine or something similar as seasoning because they are irresistible. Of course, just looking at this food raises your blood pressure and cholesterol, but for me, its worth it.
The hardest thing about putting this list together was the great places I had to leave out. Two that already have me wondering are Al Biernat’s and Perry’s. Dallas has some really good food. I reserve the right to update this list periodically. In the meantime, Bon Appétit!
